Selena Gomez, Shay Mitchell and Demi Lovato are all being adventurous with their eye shadow — and we’re jumping on board. Here’s how we’re trading in our black smoky eyes for brighter, bolder shades, just in time for summer

1. GET READY TO GO BOLD

The hottest eye makeup trend in Hollywood at the moment is colorful eyes. And we’re not just talking a sheer shade of pink eye shadow or a swipe of navy eyeliner. Rather, it’s bright blues, hot pinks, rich purples and bold oranges that have shown up both on the red carpet and in our go-to beauty stores, making it a must-try trend this summer.

So in order to find out how to get a few of our favorite celebrity-inspired looks, we turned to Make Up For Ever’s director of artistry and education Lijha Stewart. Flip through to see the full how-to and shop the products you need.

2. THE INSPIRATION: SHAY MITCHELL’S BLUE LINER

Shay Mitchell’s look is the perfect option for any pool party, but still glam enough to rock into the night.

  • STEP 1

Start by applying a bright teal eye shadow along your bottom lash line.

  • STEP 2

Layer a swipe of darker blue eyeliner over the bright blue shadow along your lower lash line, then use a brush to smudge it in, creating a smoky effect.

  • THE FINAL LOOK

Add a touch of bronzer on your cheeks and forehead, which will make the color pop.

3. THE INSPIRATION: SELENA GOMEZ’S WINGED-OUT ORANGE

Selena Gomez’s look is a gorgeous way to try a bright hue without jumping too far out of your comfort zone.

  • STEP 1

Apply a sheer layer of gold eye shadow all over your lid.

  • STEP 2

To create a slight cat eye effect, apply a burnt orange shade at the outer corners of your eyes, blending it towards the center.

  • STEP 3

Line your bottom water lines with black eyeliner to add extra dimension.

  • THE FINAL LOOK

Pair your orange lids with black mascara, glowy skin and a pale pink blush.

4. THE INSPIRATION: LUPITA NYONG’O’S SUNSET SHADOW

Lupita Nyong’o’s look might be too bold to wear anywhere other than the Met Gala, but a toned-down version of this look is perfect for warm weather.

  • STEP 1

Swipe an even layer of hot pink eye shadow from your crease to your lash line.

  • STEP 2

Using a small eye shadow brush, apply a bright yellow shadow at the inner corners of your eyes, blending it with the pink.

  • THE FINAL LOOK

Finish with a few coats of mascara and fuchsia blush.
