Travelling with pets brings a host of challenges. Here are some things to consider so your trip goes off without a hitch.

1. Visit the vet

Take your pet in for an annual checkup and ask the veterinarian which shots need to be updated.

If you haven’t already, have a microchip implanted in your dog or cat. If it runs off while you’re away, the microchip contains information that can help you get your pet back sooner.

2. Consider your travel arrangements

If you’re travelling by plane, where will the airline put your pet? Can you carry him in the passenger cabin, in a carrier, or must he travel in cargo?

If your animal’s going in cargo, make sure the cargo area is pressurized. While typical on larger planes, it’s not always available on smaller commuter flights.

3. Update your contact info

Make sure the contact information on your pet’s ID tags is current, including your cell phone number.

4. Keep everything legal

Check the legal requirements at your destination.

Some municipalities won’t allow pit bulls or ferrets, for instance.

5. Bring a pet travel bag

If you’re taking them on a vacation, be sure to pack for your pooches and kitties. Include the following:

A health certificate, along with information about vaccines, medications and your vet’s telephone number.

Enough medication for the entire trip. Make sure this is in your carry-on bag.

Your pet’s regular food, unless you’re sure you can find it at your destination. Switching food abruptly could give your pet diarrhea.

Pet favourites, including toys, bedding and kitty litter. Some people even take along tap water from home.

A first-aid kit for your pet, available in most pet stores.

The secret to travelling with your pet is to plan ahead. Just think through the details and plan early. It could make you and your pet much happier.
